AMS : Effects of Altitude
AMS : Effects of Altitude
When you feel the altitude at over 4600 m above mean sea level and you use your supplemental Oxygen.
Clicked from the top of the Wooden walkway that takes one to the highest point on the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain at around 4680 m.
The Gondola starts from around 2200 m and drops you off at around 3700 m. Then you need to climb up the wooden walkway if you want all the way to the top and you get a Medal with your name if you get to the top (which however you have to pay for).
Apparently this is the second highest Gondola in the world the first one being somewhere in South America.
A lot of the local tourists are not really well prepared and the altitude hits them. Carrying canned oxygen is mandatory and there are enough warning sign boards. I have never seen so many people getting hit by Altitude sickness. The walk up was full of people showing different signs of AMS from puking to sitting in a dazed state to gulping down oxygen. Not a very nice thing to witness.
I was thank fully kinda acclimatized as I had spent the last couple of days on the Tibetan Plateau. But the view from the top was great even though it was January. And you can imagine the temperature at 4680 m.
This mountain is the last of the permanently Glaciated Peaks of the Great Himalayan system in the Hengduan Mountains and is the most Southernly Glacier in the Nothern Hemisphere from what I know.
